How to Rank in the Google Map Pack

The Google Map Pack drives more local leads than any other spot on the page. Here's exactly how to get your business into those top 3 results.

Luke Bowman·

The three spots that matter most

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "best HVAC in Huntsville," Google shows a map with three businesses underneath it. That's the Map Pack. And it gets more clicks than any other section on the page.

If you're not in those three spots, most people will never know you exist.

The good news? Most local businesses aren't doing the work to rank there. That's your opening.

What Google actually looks at

Google uses three main factors to decide who shows up in the Map Pack:

  • Relevance — Does your business match what the person searched for?
  • Distance — How close is your business to the searcher?
  • Prominence — How well-known and trusted is your business online?

You can't control distance. But you can absolutely control relevance and prominence. Here's how.

Optimize your Google Business Profile (GBP)

This is the foundation. If your GBP is half-filled or outdated, you're not ranking. Period.

Fill out every single field:

  • Business name (your actual name — no keyword stuffing)
  • Primary category (this is the most important choice you'll make)
  • Secondary categories (add every relevant one)
  • Hours of operation
  • Service area or address
  • Business description with your services and cities mentioned naturally
  • Products and services section — fill it all out

The primary category is critical. If you're a pest control company, your primary category should be "Pest Control Service" — not "Exterminator" or something generic. Google matches search queries to categories. Get this wrong and you won't show up for the searches that matter.

Photos matter more than you think

Businesses with more than 100 photos on their GBP get 520% more calls than the average business. That's not a typo.

What to upload:

  • Photos of your actual work (before and after shots are gold)
  • Your team — real people build trust
  • Your trucks, storefront, equipment
  • Happy customers (with permission)
  • New photos regularly — Google notices freshness

Stop using stock photos. Customers can tell and so can Google.

Reviews are your secret weapon

Reviews are one of the strongest ranking signals for the Map Pack. But it's not just about quantity — it's about consistency and recency.

How to build a review machine:

  • Ask every happy customer for a review. Most will say yes.
  • Send a direct link via text or email right after the job is done
  • Respond to every single review — good and bad
  • Never buy fake reviews. Google catches this and will penalize you.

Pro tip: When customers mention your specific service and location in their review ("Great plumbing repair in Madison!"), it helps Google connect your business to those searches.

Citations build trust

A citation is any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP). Google checks these to verify your business is legitimate.

Get listed on:

  • Yelp
  • Yellow Pages
  • Better Business Bureau
  • Facebook
  • Industry-specific directories (Angi, Thumbtack, Houzz, etc.)
  • Local directories and chamber of commerce sites

The critical rule: Your NAP must be identical everywhere. Same name, same address format, same phone number. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt your ranking.

Keep your profile active

Google rewards businesses that actively manage their profiles. That means:

  • Post updates weekly — promotions, tips, project photos
  • Answer questions in the Q&A section
  • Update hours for holidays
  • Add new photos regularly

Think of your GBP as a living profile, not a one-time setup.

The bottom line

Ranking in the Map Pack isn't complicated, but it does take consistent effort. Optimize your profile, get reviews, build citations, and keep it all updated. Most of your competitors won't put in this work — and that's exactly why you'll outrank them.
